Hans W. Cohn Scholarship

The Hans W Cohn Scholarship was established by the Society for Existential Analysis in 1996 on the occasion of Hans’ 80th birthday. The Scholarship is funded by the Society and has two main criteria:

i) Originally it was for Ph. D candidates only and it has now been extended to include those taking a taught doctorate/Psych D. Applicants must be members of the Society for Existential Analysis for a minimum of one year at the time of application. Applications should be sent once the student’s research proposal has been approved. The Scholarship award amounts to £3,000. Provided funds are available an award will be made annually.
ii) The proposed thesis/research should make a significant contribution to the theory, practice and understanding of existential psychotherapy. Hans was committed to the practice of existential psychotherapy – as a psychotherapist, author, tutor and supervisor – so in the spirit of his work, applications can only be considered for proposals that research existential-phenomenological concepts with regard to their relevance for the existential practitioner. A dissertation that purely discusses the development of existential theory would not be eligible.

An application for funding needs to be supported by:
(a) Full details of your educational background, degree subjects and awards.
(b) Your doctoral/research proposal as submitted to the appropriate committee at your University (1,000-2,000 words).
(c) Confirmation from the University that this proposal has been accepted and that you are currently registered as a doctoral/psych D candidate.
(d)  Details of the fees that you will be charged and the time frame for completion.
(e) If the grant is sought for travel/accommodation expenses for research purposes, then these should itemised and the reasons for the request made clear.
(f) The application should be supported by two references: academic supervisor and practice supervisor.

The grant sought will be paid in Sterling.

Applications can be sent electronically via the SEA website or three copies of your application, together with all supporting documentation, should be sent to the Chair of the SEA:
