Exploratory discussions are currently underway regarding a merger of the College of Constructivist Psychotherapies (of which the SEA is a Member Organisation) and the Cognitive College within the UKCP membership structure. This would involve changing the name of the college to reflect its more pluralistic cognitive and existential membership (for example, to the College of Cognitive, Constructivist and Existential Psychotherapies), a good thing for enhancing the profile of existential psychotherapy within the UKCP. However, how comfortable would SEA registered members be with joining up with therapists from a cognitive modality? Please let us have your views.

Credits: CPD certificates of 24 hours will be provided for those completing the entire course

The simple practice of Mindfulness has the potential to bring about a profound change in the way we begin to experience ourselves, others and our world. When we pay intricate attention to our experience, we recognise that we have a lived experience of the arising of Existential themes. Both the traditions of Mindfulness and Existential therapy see self and reality as relational, without rigid or permanent substance. Both recognize the inter-related nature of body/mind, subject/object and self/other/world. Both recognize the presence of impermanence, change, uncertainty, suffering/existential anxiety and death as givens of existence.

Mindfulness is a dedicated contemplative practice of being present to our experience, acknowledging it and being with it with acceptance. It is a practice of awakening the heart for our self and others. It helps psychotherapists in increasing phenomenological awareness, in clearing the space to be present for clients and in staying anchored in the midst of another person’s suffering. It facilitates compassionate listening. It also facilitates monitoring and honouring the messages from our body in the therapeutic relationship. The clinical value of Mindfulness is widely accepted, including within the NICE guidelines as promoting mental health and resilience.

This course will be highly experiential and the teaching will emerge from participants’ lived experience.

Past Participants’ Testimonials: “…On both a personal and professional level this programme has been one of the best pieces of self development I have ever received.” – Murray Thomas (Executive Coach and Leadership Consultant, Director of Change-ability Consulting Ltd) at course ‘Mindfulness – Nourishing the Domain of Being’ May- July 2011.

“Excellent and very enjoyable…it has changed my life and outlook on life tremendously and I am so glad that I came onto the course.”

- Christalla Papanastasiou (Trainee Psychotherapist) at course ‘Mindfulness – Nourishing the Domain of Being’ May- July 2011.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I found mindfulness a challenging concept but Jyoti was an inspirational teacher and she introduced us to the subject in a gentle and thought provoking way. Mindfulness is definitely a part of my life now, and I feel as if I am on a new path of self discovery.” – Helen Thomas at course ‘Mindfulness – Nourishing the Domain of Being’ May -July 2011.

“Excellent and necessary. I have learned about myself and others that will be beneficial to me both professionally and personally. Jyoti was great: insightful and caring.” – Sophie-Inchley-Mort (Assistant Psychologist) at ‘Mindfulness – Nourishing the Domain of Being’2011

“ Jyoti is an excellent teacher and role model.” – Susie Nixon (Psychotherapist) at ‘Mindfulness – Nourishing the Domain of Being’ 2010

“A valuable course of noticing what exists outside of our usual perspective on things/situations/relationships. It brings a new perspective to one’s life in more peaceful, connected way… an embodiment of noticing that I hope will remain with me the rest of my life. ” – Jackie Wilson (Trainee Psychotherapist) at course ‘Mindfulness – Nourishing the Domain of Being’ 2010.

This is the letter I send to people who have not trained at SPCP via ADEP or the current D.Couns. Psy programme and wish to register with the UKCP via SEA:

————————————

To register with the UKCP, whether or not via the SEA, the following core conditions apply to all UKCP applicants and should be met:

That your training/s comprise at least 4 years.

That you have been in personal therapy for at least once a week during this time.

That you have successfully completed the training/s, and have been awarded the relevant degrees/diplomas.

That you have accumulated 450 hours of supervised client work.

That there are no outstanding complaints against you.

Additionally, for the SEA, a 5000 word case study, or an equivalent theory paper evidencing your commitment to the existential/phenomenological model and referencing appropriate theory. A paper written as part of earlier course work would be acceptable.

You would also be required to abide by the SEA’s Code of Ethics and its Complaints Procedures (attached), and be able to fulfil its CPD requirements (attached) for the year prior to your application.

If you feel that you meet these requirements, then I would need to have full details of your experience, that is:

The training/s you have undertaken, together with dates of start and completion. Please give the full name and postal address of the relevant training agency or College.

The awards achieved. Please attach copies of the degrees/diplomas awarded.

The name/s and address/es of your therapist/s.

The name/s and address/es of your clinical supervisor/s, if supervision was not provided by your training agencies.

The name and address of your current supervisor.

Details of clinical placements, together with client hours at each.

A statement confirming that there are no outstanding complaints against you. (If there have been complaints made in the past, I would need to have full details of these; the nature of the complaint, which bodies investigated them, and the outcome.)

While it is generally the case that registration procedures are left to Member Organisations, you should be aware that the UKCP reserves the right to conduct their own check on applicants. In any event the UKCP conducts random Audits on member’s qualifications and CPD hours.

A conflict can also certainly be an opportunity: for communication, for growth, for change. How effective we are in these potentially volatile situations depends a lot on our own attitude towards dispute: do we shy away from it, fear it, or relish the occasion?
This one day seminar will explore the basic proposals for understanding conflict, our own perspectives on the topic, and how to move towards a resolution of a dispute situation. We will discuss philosophical ideas, psychological insights and practical skills for appreciating and managing disagreements. The principles introduced are equally applicable to personal, commercial, legal, and organisational contexts.
The afternoon sessions will include practical exercises. There will be frequent opportunities for questions and discussions.
This seminar is aimed at personnel in HR, management, counselling and therapy, legal advisors, community agents, and anyone interested in the nature and management of conflict.
Join us for a one day seminar run by Anne Demontarlot and Karen Weixel-Dixon who are themselves experienced in psychotherapy and the management of conflict in commercial and personal contexts.
The aim of this study is to explore how therapists experience dialogue in therapy with their clients. The word dialogue originates in the Greek word dialegesthai ‘converse with’ and dia ‘through’ (legein) ‘speak’. Dialogue is ‘a discussion or conversation, between two or more people, directed towards exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem’, Oxford Dictionary (2011).Individual interviews with participants will be audio recorded at research facilities provided by Regent’s College in London.
